Carlsbad Caverns National Park
an installment of what happens to my photos when i die?
April 2025
I didn't really read much about this park before arriving. It was way more developed than I expected with a sizeable visitor center, parking lot, amphitheater, and even elevators to the bottom of the caverns. There are a few trails above ground but the main attraction, of course, is the cavern.
The cavern entrance
The cavern is HUGE, with miles of underground trails surrounded by all sorts of stalagmites and stalactites. It's highly modified; Added lighting, paved trails, handrails, elevators, with even a restaurant, gift shop, bathroom, vending machines, and mailbox at the bottom of the cavern. But it all helps create an accessible experience that didn't detract much from the amazing formations.
It was hard to get good pictures even with the added lighting, wide aperture, and high ISO!
There's an evening presentation accompanying the daily bat flight, where all the cavern's bats exit for their nightly hunt shortly after sundown. All electronic devices had to be completely powered off so the bats weren't affected by them, so I don't have pictures.
There isn't a whole lot to do above ground but there are some nice views of the desert landscape and cacti galore.
