Guadalupe Mountains National Park
an installment of what happens to my photos when i die?
April 2025
We hiked part of the Permian Reef trail our first day in GUMO. It was too hot for me to go all the way up to the ridge and back (almost 10 miles) but I did cross a state border on foot for the first time. Throughout almost 4 hours on the trail we encountered a grand total of one other person.

There were dozens of these Barbary Sheep on the rocky cliff faces of the trail. Apparently they're an invasive species brought from Africa to stock hunting ranches but soon escaped to the wild.

Starting at the Pine Springs trailheads, this trail mostly follows a "wash," or a dry riverbed. I LOVE hiking rocky terrain. Boulders, scrambles, limestone--Devil's Hall did not disappoint!
I climbed this!
Cool trees!
Cool rocks!
Cool plants!
El Capitan (not to be confused with the one in Yosemite) sits next to Guadalupe Peak, the highest point in Texas. It can be summited on a 9 mile trail, OR you can stop by this roadside viewpoint just outside the Pine Springs area.
There are salt flats just west of the Guadalupe Mountains, and there's a small pullout where you can see the park in the distance behind the salt flats.
